Cutting skirting boards to the ceiling. We cut corners of a ceiling plinth: tools and methods of cutting

High-quality repairs require careful and accurate attention to detail. Finishing work with the ceiling, you need to make it well - for this, ceiling skirtings are used. As a rule, the installation of strips does not cause any special difficulties, you will have to tinker with the corners. Let's take a closer look at how to cut a ceiling plinth in the corners, talk about different methods, and give useful recommendations on the topic.

  Ceiling skirtings of any material can be cut using one of the methods described below. They are suitable for everyone except plastic ones: they make out using ready-made corners.

  What tools will be needed?

For ceiling skirting, the following tools may come in handy depending on the chosen method of operation:

  • Saw on wood. Useful for working with wooden.
  • Canvas for metal. Suitable for other types of skirting boards (foam, plastic, etc.).
  • Miter box. The tool is a chute, which has the shape of an inverted P, where lines for cutting are marked at angles of 45 ° and 90 °.
  • Electric miter saw. Can be used instead of miter box, helps to achieve high precision slices.
  • Jigsaw. Easy to operate, with the help of it you can qualitatively and correctly cut the corner without burrs.
  • Office or construction knife. Suitable for foam baseboards, it is important that it has an excellent cutting blade, and therefore should be well sharpened.

  How to make a flat angle: ways

The most difficult thing is to cut the angle so as to get perfectly flat: the surface of the materials used is not easy to cut, in addition, you need to maintain a good joint, preferably without huge gaps. How to make a corner on the ceiling baseboard? You can use several methods: with a miter box, without a miter box, using decorative corners, as well as an alternative method.

How to cut a ceiling plinth without a miter box? To work, you will need a well-sharpened pencil, a small piece of the plinth, an office knife (for polystyrene or polyurethane) or a metal saw (for other materials), a ruler.

You need to attach the baseboard to the corner and draw a line with a pencil along the outer edge, then attach to the other side of the corner and also mark. As a result, a cross appears on the ceiling, the center of which will mark the place where the planks of the ceiling plinth should converge. Install the length of the baseboard where you will stick it. Supporting the wall with the end face, transfer the desired mark to it. Thus, it is possible to cut the corners of the ceiling plinth without a miter box.

  Making corners using a miter box

If the walls and corners of the room are even, you can use a miter box for work. To correctly cut the corner, inside the miter box, lay the part in which the person will do the gash, then insert the saw into the guides. Thus, the part will be held in place, and it can be cut at the desired angle. For high-quality cutting of the skirting board, it must simultaneously adhere to both surfaces, so it should be pressed against the wall of the miter box. The ceiling plinth is pressed on the side that is closer to you.

With the help of a miter box, you will need to slaughter an angle of 45 degrees. First you need to decide how to position the baseboard in the miter box. To avoid confusion and cut correctly, place the right bar on the right and the left on the left.

Follow the instructions below:

  • Put together the cut pieces - you got an inner or outer corner.

Attach it to the ceiling and check the geometry. If it is not smooth enough, it can be slightly corrected with a knife, and in case of minor defects and wide gaps, you can use putty.

With the help of them you can easily and quickly get the right angles in the baseboards made of polystyrene or polyurethane. Install them on the ceiling, and then glue the bars to them tightly. Trimming them is simple using a clerical knife.

  How to make corners of a ceiling plinth without fixtures

  1. Make the necessary marks on the skirting boards.
  2. Using a ruler, connect the edge of the baseboard to the mark. If you just kill along the line, the parts in the corner will still not add up, since the inside will interfere. You can trim it later, making measurements on the ceiling.
  3. You can lay on the table the piece that should be cut, the part that will be located on the ceiling, and cut at an angle of 45 degrees. Correction will be required, but less.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the second bar, making the outer corner.

Thus, it is possible to make a ceiling plinth without special tools, using improvised means.

You can not make fillets yourself, but immediately purchase those that were originally prepared for docking. So produce polystyrene foam fillets, which do not need to be customized for each other.

The baguette, which will be fixed on the left, must have a right cut, the right baguette - left. When creating the inner corner, make sure that the lower section rises above the upper one, for the outer corner everything should be the other way around.

Attach baguettes to each other, if necessary, make cuts at the joints of the base. If everything is in order, the skirting boards can be fixed to glue or screwed to the walls with further sealing of the seams.

  How to join skirting boards in the corners

When a certain part of the plinth is glued and a small distance remains to the corner, in order not to make a mistake with the length, it is necessary to leave a margin. To begin with, you can cut a piece that will be 10-15 cm longer. Then cut the corner in a convenient way, try it on a dry surface, put the bar on the ceiling and select the place to which it needs to be shortened. Trimming is performed at an angle of 90 °.

Next, you need to correctly dock the corners. The made ceiling moldings are mounted at an angle of 38-45 °, so the classic at 45 ° is not always suitable at the joints. In different cases, the trimmed edges do not fit and leave gaps. For this reason, after the initial trimming of the corners, you need to “dry” and as accurately as possible join the baguettes directly to the ceiling. Especially you have to tinker with wood and plastic materials.

Having completed the rough docking of the skirting boards, glue or screw the fillets to the walls and ceiling, then use putty if necessary and seal the seams at the end.

  Important points on how to cut ceiling skirting in corners

Consider how to properly cut the corners of the ceiling plinth and get the perfect result the first time. Follow some helpful suggestions:

  • Before mounting, both parts must be adjusted to each other. Attach both halves to each other. The surface of the wall should be dry. Having discovered defects, you can easily align them with a knife.
  • You may need a few trim. Do not be discouraged if it takes you a lot of time and you have to do a few trimings, especially if you are doing the work for the first time.
  • Correctly determine the length of the strips in the corners. For the inner corner, the length of the bar should be adjusted exactly from corner to corner; on the outside, measurement is made from the inside point in the direction of the room.
  • If the angles as a whole match perfectly, but there are small gaps in the middle, they can be repaired with putty.

  How to glue a ceiling plinth

Start work from the corners of the room, as they are easier to work with, then move on to other parts of the room. Seal the corners in such a way that, if possible, no gaps or defects are formed, if they are inevitable, are insignificant. For plastic skirting boards apply finishing putty.

Water or soil is applied to the fastener sections. After the putty mixture has dried, all the cracks must be repaired - various sealants are used for coating (professional builders recommend choosing acrylic-based products). In general, one package requires one package. Installation using sealant is carried out in the same way as when using putty.

Installation of baguettes and baseboards gives the repair a finished and neat look, but only if the trim is done correctly and all the joints converge perfectly evenly. For trimming, different tools and methods are used to facilitate the work, but it is also important to take into account the many nuances that we will talk about today.

Types of ceiling and floor skirting boards, selection of tools

Installation of baguettes and baseboards is no less important stage of repair than any other. And trimming the corners here is the most difficult. It is important to choose the right tool for the job and the most suitable cutting method.

Ceiling plinth

A ceiling baguette, a molding, a fillet, a curb, or just a plinth, is most often used to finish the joint between a wall and a ceiling. Although sometimes they cover internal corners, make decorative frames or panels, decorate niches and architectural elements. There are some of the most popular materials for making ceiling moldings:

Plastic (polyvinyl chloride).  It is more convenient to cut wide and rigid moldings with a hacksaw for metal. If you need a more gentle tool, use a jigsaw.

Polyfoam (polystyrene foam).  Very light and porous material, which is best cut with a sharp construction or office knife.

Wooden baguettes.  For cutting suitable saws with helical grinding, specially designed for baguettes. You can also use manual or jigsaws.

Baseboard

A modern floor skirting can hardly be called a bar that closes the gap. This is a constructive component that complements the design and emphasizes the overall design. Skirting boards are made of several materials:

Wooden  can be made of solid wood or veneer. For cutting use flat or circular saws, jigsaws.

Plastic baseboards  - “Dangerous” competitors to traditional wood. Easy to install and cut with a conventional hacksaw.

Aluminum baseboards  - the last word in interior design. They are usually cut with an electric saw or a hand saw for metal.

Only on wooden skirting boards will have to do corner trimming. The rest are trimmed evenly and connected using special corners.

Types of Angles

The angular docking and trimming of the skirting board differs depending on the type of corner; they distinguish between internal, external and non-standard.

The internal angle, in other words, the angle of the room is less than 180 °, usually 90 °. When trimming the inner corner, the lower part of the ceiling plinth always protrudes above the upper. The first step is still to measure the angle between the walls, if it is standard and equal to 90 °, then the trims are cut at an angle of 45 °. The baguette that is glued on the right side should be slaughtered on the left, and the left bar - on the right.

The outer or outer corner is less common, it is more than 180 °, usually about 270 °. In working with such angles, everything is exactly the opposite. The edge of the baseboard, which will be pressed against the ceiling, should be larger than the bottom.

Custom angles. Under these most often mean angles with a degree more or less than the standard of 90 ° and 270 °, as well as various kinds of rounding. Trimming in this case is carried out “by eye” or with marking in place. Curved sections are assembled from several small elements, each of which is adjusted in turn.

Skirting Methods

If the corners are standard, it is most convenient to cut the skirting boards using a miter box or a stencil. In other cases, resort to the method of marking in place.

Cutting a baguette with a miter box

Miter box - a carpentry tool that is designed specifically for cutting baguette. It can be made of plastic, wood or metal. The shape resembles a tray with slots (grooves) on the walls. The miter box helps to correctly determine the angle of inclination and evenly cut the bar at 45, 60 or 90 degrees. Some models may have more graduation guides.

When working with the miter box, it is important to put the baguette correctly:

  1. The baguette in the end section has the shape of an irregular triangle, so the side that will be glued to the ceiling is pressed to the bottom of the miter box, and the wall side to the wall of the tool.
  2. The incision is performed through opposite grooves. If you need to cut the baguette at an internal angle, then it is cut at an acute angle, and if the external - at a dull angle.
  3. Ceiling skirting boards always fit to the nearest wall. The left side is laid on the left side, and the right side, respectively, on the right.
  4. Skirting boards are applied to the far wall of the miter box, “away from you”. Corners are cut in the same way.

A stencil is nothing more than a flat imitation of a miter box. Make it easy. To begin with, it is worth arming yourself with a ruler, pencil and protractor.

On a flat surface draw two parallel lines, the width between which should not be less than the width of the baguette. Perpendicular is drawn in the middle of the segments. All angles should be 90 °. Then this segment connecting two parallels is divided in half and two more lines are drawn through the point at an angle of 45 ° from the perpendicular. A baguette is placed on the stencil, as in a miter box.

Cutting with pencil marks

This is another way to cut a baguette straight without a miter box.

For the inner corner.  The baseboard is applied to the ceiling as it will have to stand, to the left of the corner, and draw a line on the ceiling. Then the segment is applied to the other side, to the right of the corner, and a line is also drawn on the ceiling. Two lines should form a point of intersection. Again, pieces of the plinth are applied in turn and from the intersection point a straight line is lowered to the lower edge of the plinth, it will be the cut line.

For the outside corner.  Place the baseboard to the right of the corner and draw a line on the ceiling with a pencil beyond the corner of the wall. After that, a plinth is applied on the left side of the corner and a second line is drawn to the intersection with the first. The intersection point is transferred to the upper edge of the baguette. The point at which the corner of the walls converges and the inner lower edge of the baguette will be the second mark. Two points connect and slice the baguette along the line.

Cutting a wide molding with a pattern

If a large drawing on the surface of the curb fell just at the junction of the inner corner, it will have to be adjusted, otherwise the general appearance will be spoiled.

A section with a pattern is cut from the ceiling molding, leaving 5 cm of margin on the sides. The resulting area is divided in half, that is, make an even cut in the middle of the pattern. After that, they cut the baguette in the miter box or by eye.

Some helpful tips to help you get started:

  1. Before embarking on fine cutting, it is worth practicing on a small segment.
  2. The baguette should be cut on the front side, then the roughness of the cut will remain on the back side.
  3. Saw can be carefully trimmed with a knife or sandpaper.
  4. The skirting board should be cut on a hard, level surface.
  5. If a miter box is used, for convenience it can be fixed to the working surface with self-tapping screws.
  6. If the result is unsatisfactory and the gaps at the joints are still visible, they can be carefully puttyed.

If the angles in the repaired room are even, you can buy ready-made corners for the chosen type of baguette and completely avoid the stage with trimming the corners.

When someone first takes up the preparation of corners, most often he has to spoil more than one meter of material. Alas, even an acquired miter box does not always help in this when the walls in the room are connected at an arbitrary, and not at right angles.

Then you have to rely on your own eye or make a special template. Today you will learn how to make corners of a ceiling molding with and without a tool.

Tip: instead of a saw attached to the miter, it is better to use a conventional hacksaw for metal. Its cutting is more accurate and even, which is very important in this process.

Before starting work

Choosing the right baguette width is the key to a beautiful interior. Not the least role in the sawing process is also played by the method by which you do it. We want to give you a couple of recommendations that will help you achieve your plan.

So, how to choose the width of the material and how to cut the ceiling plinth in the corners:

  • the prepared wall surface is not a standard for evenness, use strips of smaller width, as they are more flexible and will be able to cover the maximum number of defects. Accordingly, on the contrary, the more ideal the surface, the width of the molding can be greater, however, keep in mind - mount a narrow baguette in rooms with low ceilings, so as not to reduce them visually;
  • always apply the left part of the corner to the miter when cutting it to the left, the right - to the right. In addition, it should be the side of the tool closest to you, the far side for floor moldings. Please do not confuse.

Below we will deal with the task in more detail, where you will learn how to cut the corners of the ceiling plinth correctly and with the highest quality.

External

There is one nuance of this process that you should never forget. We always look at the fillet ceiling from below, so when the bar is placed in the miter box (to the wall closest to you), it must be turned over.

The upper part of the molding will then be at your bottom, and the lower, respectively, at the top. Thus, there will be no gaps between the planes of the parts of the corner when they are connected.

The process instruction will be as follows:

  1. Take measuring tools, such as a tape measure, and a pencil. Begin marking from the inside corner so you don’t miss the outside. It may happen that the length of the baguette is not enough and you have to make many joints;
  2. Attach the molding to the ceiling surface and mark the dimensions;
  3. Prepare a miter box and a hacksaw for metal. Press the baguette to the side of the instrument closest to you;
  4. Hold the fillet with your hand and select the position of the hacksaw at which the appropriate connection angle will be set. These can be standard parameters - 45, 90, or 135˚, or arbitrary, for which it is necessary to expand the miter box by the selected degree;
  5. Cut the workpiece with a hacksaw;
  6. Install the opposite bar to the near wall of the tool and fix it by hand;
  7. Set the selected degree on the miter and cut the workpiece with a hacksaw for metal;
  8. Dock the resulting plinth planks.

Tip: if the walls are connected to each other at a right angle, only in this case the miter box will help you in your work, otherwise you will have to do it yourself.

Interior

There is a professional miter box, which has a rotary platform and can be moved apart to obtain arbitrary angles, as well as for home use, where special opportunities are limited. Usually in repairs it is enough to use the second option.

So, the basic principle is that the ceiling strips are cut off at the wall of the tool closest to you, we hope you have not forgotten.

The process in this case looks like this:

  1. Measure the required length of the baguette, applying it to the ceiling surface;
  2. Put the molding strip in the miter box, while its position should fully correspond to the location of the baguette on the ceiling;
  3. Press the bar against the near wall of the tool;
  4. Choose the appropriate degree of cut, most often it is 45. Make sure that the hacksaw handle is as close as possible to the hand holding the bar to make the cut as accurately as possible;
  5. Cut the workpiece, but do not apply excessive force to the hacksaw;
  6. Prepare and trim the opposite framing, not forgetting that it should be pressed against the near wall of the miter box;
  7. Choose the appropriate cutting angle for it, leaving a minimum distance between the hacksaw handle and the hand holding the molding;
  8. Cut the edge of the bar.

It remains to verify the correctness of the joining of the segments, and if everything meets the expectations, set them in place.

Tip: start cutting from the front of the molding, then you can orient it as accurately as possible on the spot. After cutting the corners of a wooden baguette, process and adjust the file.

How to make corners of a ceiling baguette without a miter box

For the first time deciding to make a framing on the ceiling, a beginner does not see this as any problem, but in vain. We recommend that you immediately consider the cost of a certain amount of material that you just have to throw away.

Alas, but at what angle to cut the ceiling plinth depends only on the connection of the walls to each other. Not every one corresponds to a straight line, for which it is enough to simply cut the bars under 45˚. Often there are parameters corresponding to 85 or 95 degrees, but this is a problem for beginner finishers.

If you are the owner of an apartment built in the last century, this was generally considered the norm. The fact is that when you simply cut the strips under 45˚ and install on the ceiling, there will be gaps between them, which will then have to be sealed with sealant or putty. We will try to help you solve this problem with minimal cost, since the price of not every molding is cheap.

So, how to correctly cut the corners of the ceiling plinth for the inner corner:

Training Prepare the tool you need in your work.

If the baseboard is made of:

  • foam or polyurethane, it is enough to have a sharp knife or hacksaw for metal;
Markup
  1. Take the molding and attach it to the selected corner. Orient it in the same way as it will be installed in the end. With a pencil, draw a line along the bar and remove it;
  2. Perform the same procedure with the second fillet as with the previous one. In this case, it should adjoin the junction;
  3. As a result, you get a marked plot;
  4. Take the baguette, lean it against the markings. Transfer to it the intersection point of two lines drawn by you earlier;
  5. Draw a line from it to the opposite edge of the fillet, which will be the cut line. With the second baguette, do the same.
Cut Use a sharp knife or hacksaw to cut the edge of the molding.
Check Take two resulting baguettes and attach them to the corner. There should be no gap between them; otherwise, correct the surfaces with a knife.

Remember when creating:

  • inner corner - the lower part protrudes above the upper;
  • outer - upper above the bottom.

Output

If it seemed to you that the work of creating a beautiful interior using a ceiling baguette is quite complicated, this is only at first glance. Do everything according to our instructions and you will quickly understand the essence of the process. The main thing is to be careful and correctly calculate the amount of material for work.

The video in this article will provide an opportunity to expand your knowledge on this topic. If you have any questions during the reading of the publication and after it, please ask them in the comments, we will be happy to answer them.

The installation of the skirting board is the final touch of the repair. And if the installation of the product on the straight sections of the joints of the walls and ceiling is quite easy, then facing the corners often causes problems. Many people, not knowing the technology of cutting skirting boards, spoil more than a dozen slats in the hope of docking them in difficult places. We will tell you how to properly refine the external and internal corners so that they look neat and give the interior a complete look.

Types of ceiling skirting boards and scope

Before moving on to the issue of cutting products, consider its varieties. Indeed, it depends on the choice of this finishing element whether the room will receive the desired visual volume and whether it will become more comfortable and pleasing to the eye.

Choosing the perfect finish for the ceiling joint, which will harmoniously combine with the design of the room, is not so difficult, because the range of products today is very wide. Ceiling plinths (fillet) are available for sale, made of different materials: plastic, polystyrene, polyurethane, polystyrene foam, wood and gypsum. In this case, all strips can have a different color, texture, profile configuration, as well as dimensions. Consider the features of the use of fillets, depending on what material they are made of.

Knowing which type of skirting is best used in a place that needs decoration, it will be easier for you to navigate when choosing a product and pay maximum attention to creating your own unique interior design.

  1. Plastic products, in addition to the decorative function, can be used as a groove for attaching PVC wall panels. Such fillets are not glued to the surface, but fastened to a pre-mounted frame by means of brackets or self-tapping screws.
  2. Styrofoam strips are preferably used for finishing plasterboard suspended ceilings. They can also be installed on the concrete base itself, previously plastered. This is the most budgetary option for ceiling skirting, as the product has a rough surface, which is prone to contamination. Therefore, it is advisable to apply a paint coat to such fillets after installation.
  3. Polyurethane decorative elements are used for the final decoration of false ceilings from polyvinyl chloride panels. The fillet is fixed using special glue for PVC products.
  4. Styrofoam ceiling plinth is a universal finishing element, since it can be used for finishing primed surfaces, as well as ceilings lined with plastic panels. The baseboard can be fixed with special glue or gypsum putty.
  5. Plaster products are often used to give the interior a certain pomp, characteristic, for example, of royal houses. Installation of such skirting boards is carried out on gypsum materials, that is, putty or alabaster.
  6. A fillet made of wood is a classic decoration of ceiling-wall joints. This is the most expensive skirting option, but also the most durable.

Tools for work

The first question that people who are going to install the skirting board with their own hands are asked is: how to cut it? The tool is selected depending on the material of which the fillet is made. For example, polyvinyl chloride products have a hollow structure. Therefore, so that when cutting the edges of the cut turned out as even as possible, you need to use a hacksaw with small teeth. Otherwise, cracks and chips may form on the finish.

The best option is to use a saw for metal - its teeth are small, and the width of their divorce is suitable. However, the use of a hacksaw is limited to products with a rigid structure, that is, it is not suitable for thin-walled fillets. The fact is that the teeth can severely damage the surface of the baseboard.

You can also use a hand jigsaw to cut fillets. When cutting products with such a tool, the angles are as even as possible. But this device has several drawbacks. Due to the short length of the cutting blade, the use of a miter box (a special tool for cutting skirting boards) becomes very problematic. In addition, cutting is slow.

Useful advice: If the fillet has thin walls, then use a clerical knife to cut it, namely its construction modification with a reinforced blade.

What is a miter box?

High-quality trimming of the product is possible only with strict observance of geometric shapes. When mounting the skirting board, the fulfillment of this condition is extremely important, because to obtain a neat connecting seam between the decorative elements, you must have an even cut. If you perform this procedure “by eye”, then the gapless connection of the two skirting boards cannot be done, because the ends will not correspond to each other.

The best quality cut can be performed using a special carpentry tool called a miter box. Its design may be different, but the principle of operation always remains unchanged. There are devices with manual adjustment of the angle of cut, however, builders often use the standard variation of the tool, which is a wooden or plastic tray with vertical grooves in the walls for inserting the saw. Thanks to the miter box, you can easily perform vertical trimming of skirting boards at an angle of 45 and 90 degrees.

In addition to cutting tools and carpentry fixtures, when installing a fillet you may need: a pencil, a protractor, a self-tapping screw, mounting glue and sealant.

Corner Trimming Technology

Fillet fillets for external corners are performed in the opposite direction

You can cut the skirting board using a miter box and without it. Consider each of the ways. Cutting a corner with a special tool is very easy. First, the required fillet length is measured. Then the first skirting board is placed in the miter box, and the cutting tool is inserted into the vertical holes.  The location of the hacksaw is selected based on the angle at which you want to cut the product. Next is a cut. At the second stage, the second strip is trimmed, which will be docked with the first. In this case, the hacksaw should be inserted into the opposite grooves at a similar angle.

Important: When combining two planks between them, you should get a right angle. Only in this case can we proceed to the next stage - fixing the product.

Trimming corners without using a carpentry tool is done using markings at the installation site. The biggest inconvenience in this case is to hold the decorative element under the ceiling. First, measurements are made here: the planks cut off at right angles are applied in turn to the place of their installation and outlined with a pencil. The result is a connection point for the elements. Then, a cut line is drawn on the planks from the junction point to the corner, and the products are cut off with the subsequent verification of the connection accuracy.

Cutting instruction

To join the trim element at the inner corner, you need to cut the left and right trims. Consider a method of cutting using a miter box. The procedure here is as follows:

For convenience, cut the right baseboard into the tray on the left side, turning it over

  1. First, we mark the corner in order to eliminate the situation with a lack of length of the prepared product.
  2. We take the left bar in the left hand and install it in the miter box at the far side of the device. In this case, the fillet is positioned at such an angle at which it will be installed to the ceiling.
  3. Next, insert the saw into the near right and far left vertical holes of the miter box (at an angle of 45 degrees to the bar). We make a cut.
  4. Set the right bar by analogy with the left. In this case, the product must be turned so that its ceiling edge lies on the base of the miter box.
  5. This time we insert the hacksaw into the near left and far right grooves. We perform a cut.
  6. We take both strips, we join on the floor and check the accuracy of their fit to each other.

As for the outer corners, they are found indoors infrequently, but, unlike the internal ones, their flaws are more noticeable. In this case, extremely accurate docking is required. If the value of the internal angle is 90 degrees, then the external angle is 270 degrees. Therefore, the fillets are cut off in the opposite direction.

To finish the outer corner, the left plinth trim is trimmed similarly to the right for the inner corner, and the right - similarly to the left

Work Stages:

  1. Measure the sides of the corner.
  2. We take the left bar in the left hand and set it in the miter box.
  3. We insert the hacksaw into the near left and far right grooves at an angle of 45 degrees to the baseboard and cut the product.
  4. We start the reciprocal level, turning it over. We put the saw in the near right and far left holes. We make a cut.
  5. We check on the floor the accuracy of the junction of the two slats. If everything is in order, then we can proceed to fixing the decorative element.

How to trim fillets

If your house has rounded corners, then finishing them will take more time and labor. Installation of the plinth in this case requires certain skills. Such angles can be ennobled in two ways:

  1. We cut the fillet into pieces with a width of 5 cm. Depending on the length of the arc, a different number of parts may be required, but it is advisable to use at least four. Straight ends should only be at the extreme parts that will dock with the baseboard itself.
  2. Now glue the extreme pieces to the previously installed straight fillets.
  3. We customize the remaining pieces, cutting them as necessary. Glue all parts butt.
  4. We close the gaps with sealant or putty. Tint and mask the joints, giving the finish a finished look.

Useful advice: Number all the pieces so as not to confuse the order of their installation.

In the same way, the baseboard is mounted on columns and poles located in the room.

Using a flexible fillet allows you to reduce the number of angular parts to the maximum, because in some situations, one bar is enough to finish the corner. Often, such a baseboard is made of polyurethane, so it can be bent at any angle. By the way, the product is often used for facing complex ceiling structures with rounded elements.

The presence of connecting parts in the interior is not always appropriate. A more aesthetic approach to joining a ceiling plinth is the formation of connecting seams. A careful cut of the product is the key to a beautiful appearance of the entire finish.

The miter box usually looks like a tray with vertical holes for a hacksaw. It can be made of wood, metal or plastic. This tool represents the oldest and simplest carpenter tool designed to cut wooden parts at 90 ° and 45 °. There are types of such devices for professional work, with a rotary mechanism, in them the cutting tool can be rotated and fixed in any position.

  How to properly cut the ceiling skirting

Ceiling corners are divided into internal and external, the method of docking on them is slightly different.

If necessary, you can make a miter box with your own hands. To do this, you need three trim from plywood or boards of the same size. First, they are applied in the form of an inverted letter “P” and mark the corners. Then, according to the marking, cuts are cut out under the hacksaw almost to the very bottom, and the boards are twisted.

Inside corner

    • Making the right measurements.
    • We install the plinth strip in the miter box so that this position exactly matches the placement on the ceiling.
    • The baseboard must be pressed firmly against the opposite wall of the miter box. Hold and hold with your free hand.
    • We put a hacksaw at an angle of 45 ° in a special hole and cut off the part.

  • An adjacent part must be cut in the same way, only in a mirror image, as shown in the photo.

When cutting soft materials (PVC, polystyrene foam) use a hacksaw for metal or a conventional construction knife. Then the work will be neat and with even edges.

Outer corner

  • The length of the plinth is measured from the nearest wall to the outer corner, the line is left on the inside with a pencil, indicating the desired length. It should be noted that the edge (its upper part) should go out a little.
  • The baseboard is moved into the miter box and cut.
  • The adjacent bar also needs to be measured with a margin and cut in mirror image to the first part.

We try on the ceiling plinth: the joining of the parts should be perfectly even. If the result is not achieved and there are irregularities at the joints, you can trim the edges with an ordinary knife to the perfect fit.

The video describes all the nuances well:

The second way - without additional tools

For the inner corner, you can use the simplest method of perfect joining - by marking on the ceiling. Another example of how to cut a corner is beautiful and even.

    1. Apply the fillet to the ceiling, tightly pressing its even edge into the corner.
    2. Draw a line along the long side of the baseboard on the ceiling.

    1. The same action is done with an adjacent part on the other side.

    1. Mark the point of intersection of the lines.

The result is an even angle of 45 ° if you draw a line from the intersection point to the edge of the part. Note that the above marking method works only with perfectly even angles.

other methods

With a good eye and accuracy of hand action, you can use a home-made template that resembles an imitation of a miter box. To do this, take a thin board or dense plywood and draw a layout in the form of a horizontal rectangle. Using a protractor, 45 ° is noted on the right and left side of the rectangle. Draw lines connecting the opposite edges.

  Now you can cut off the ceiling skirting board using this layout. The actions are simple and similar to the description above in the first embodiment. Only the ceiling parts should not be inserted, but superimposed on the drawing and combine the hacksaw with the layout of the layout.

  Special accessories for docking

By installing ceiling skirting boards, you can get around the question of how to cut a corner side. In a situation where you don’t want to cut anything, if you are a woman and love beauty, not carpentry, you can go the other way. We advise you to choose a skirting board for your decoration, to which you will find a part matching the drawing in the store that covers the joint. This method will save time and effort.
